Manufacturing Process for Steel Ingot
The process of manufacturing Pencil Ingots from raw materials such as scrap can be broadly classified as:
Melting of Raw-Material:
1. Selection of Raw-Material
Different grades of steel scrap are procured from the various suppliers. This is one of the most important steps in the steel making as the quality of scrap has a direct impact on the quality of the finished goods. Our company makes sure that the raw material is free from all unnecessary wastes so as to ensure that the quality of finished goods is in accordance to the preset standards.
2. Charging and Loading of Raw Material into Furnace
The scrap is stored right next to the furnace for easy operation. It is charged into the furnace by using an Electro magnetic device attached to an overhead crane. This ensures lifting of sizable amount of scrap which saves time, energy and cost. The crane used is called an E.O.T. Crane. It replaces the need and dependence on manpower. Besides charging of scraps into furnace it also handles other operation like removal of ingots moulds, removal of Pencil Ingots etc.
3. Melting Process
The furnace crucible is charged with the requisite quantity of scrap and the lid is put on. Power introduced and the furnace gets hot and the steel starts to melt. Heating is continued till the entire metal mass melts to liquid 'state. At this stage, a little time is available for adding inclusions like Ferro alloys and carbon, if necessary.
4. Laboratory
A small quantity is tested in a sample cup, for the material composition. The required grade of Carbon, Manganese and Silicon is ensured in the first step.
The other impurities such as Sulphur and Phosphorus are controlled to the permissible levels. Slag material is removed before some additives like Nickel, Molybdenum, Chromium etc. are added in small quantities as recommended to develop desired strength, hardness and surface finish in the final product. Next, the molten metal is now ready for pouring in the moulds.
